Over the last decade, Energy Renaissance (ER) has built a strong technology platform with applications across Stationary Storage, Defence, and Mobility sectors. We’re recognised as a leading voice in the Australian battery industry by government, media, and technology partners, including CSIRO. It’s time to look back and celebrate 10 years of developing Australia’s first battery gigafactory and unique Australian battery technology. We asked founder and Managing Director Brian Craighead some of his thoughts on the journey.
The inspiration to start ER sprang from a profound frustration with climate sceptics, the unnecessary decline of Australian manufacturing, and an unwavering passion for innovation. Believing wholeheartedly in what’s possible with determination, we envisioned creating high-quality products locally while revitalising our community through job creation. This steadfast commitment drove ER to turn that vision into reality, proving that with enough resolve, we can revive and revolutionise Australian manufacturing and innovation.
One of the biggest hurdles has been competing with overseas manufacturers who can offer lower prices due to government-subsidised products and economies of scale. Overcoming the perception that imported products are always more cost-effective has been a significant challenge.
Yes, there have been moments when it all seemed impossible. We – somehow – needed to create a product that was tougher, safer, and easier to use than imports, but we didn’t have the capital or scale of bigger companies. What got us through was the support of our early investors and suppliers, partnering with CSIRO, working late nights, the bravery of our early customers, and our determination not to give up.
A turning point came with the development of our technology platform in collaboration with CSIRO, especially the innovations that ensure cybersecurity and system integrity in energy storage. That level of safety and resilience—particularly relevant in critical infrastructure and defence applications—is something imported batteries can’t match. Together, we created solutions that are smarter and more suitable locally than imports and made it happen.
The most rewarding aspect has been witnessing the tangible impact on the community—creating jobs, fostering local partnerships, and seeing customers value and trust Australian-made products. Seeing our technology deployed in real-world applications, from grid storage to defence, and knowing it’s safe, secure, and Australian-made—that’s deeply satisfying.
State and Federal Governments were both sceptical, but over time became more positive. Before the recent “Future Made in Australia” announcement, support was limited, but the need to bolster domestic production was acknowledged. We are now seeing a more proactive approach with initiatives aimed at supporting and incentivising Australian manufacturers, and we hope to see that firm up with the government’s impending launch of the Battery Breakthrough Initiative.
The government has made encouraging progress recently, but there’s still room for more consistent and comprehensive support to ensure the long-term sustainability of domestic manufacturing, particularly in procurement.
We’d like to see the government leverage their buying power with procurement that levels the playing field, offers more substantial financial incentives, reduces regulatory hurdles, and continues to invest in advanced manufacturing technologies. Additionally, promoting Australian-made goods domestically and internationally would significantly benefit the industry.
Focus on quality, commit to local suppliers, and develop innovation that can level the playing field. Also—invest in IP. Our collaboration with CSIRO enabled us to build world-leading cybersecurity features into our battery management system, which has been a game-changer. And never, ever give up.
Supporting Australian manufacturing strengthens the national economy, ensures higher quality standards, and promotes job creation. It also fosters innovation and reduces dependency on international supply chains. In sectors like energy storage and defence, local capability is also a matter of national security.
ER and its network of local suppliers embody the spirit of Australian dedication and craftsmanship. Our batteries are designed specifically for Australian conditions and use cases—from stationary energy to military applications. Products like our Defence 6T battery are rugged, secure, and built to meet the most demanding operational environments. They’re cyber-secure, Australian-made, and field-tested.
Choosing ER means supporting local communities and being part of a story that values people over profit. It’s about pride in contributing to something homegrown and meaningful.
Economic Growth: Supporting local manufacturing boosts the national economy and creates jobs.
Quality Assurance: Australian-made products adhere to strict quality and ethical standards.
Community Impact: Your support fosters community development and sustainable practices.
I want people to remember that ER represents the heart of Australian innovation and community spirit—when you choose ER, you’re not just buying a product but supporting a vision for a stronger, self-reliant Australia. We’re proof that world-class technology can be born right here at home—and that it’s safer, smarter, and built for the future.
